Malachite is a secondary mineral that forms when carbon dioxide laden waters descend into the Earth and reacts with subsurface copper ore deposits. Malachite, a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, typically forms in conjunction with azurite under similar conditions. These minerals are often found in the same deposit and intergrown with one another. Malachite has a vibrant green color that does not fade over time or when exposed to light.
