Azurite is a rare copper carbonate hydroxide mineral known for its deep “azure†blue color. Azurite is a secondary replacement mineral that forms when carbon dioxide laden waters descend into the Earth and reacts with subsurface copper ores. Malachite, a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, typically forms in conjunction with azurite under similar conditions. These minerals are often found in the same deposit and intergrown with one another. This produces a material known as azurmalachite, which can be used to make beautiful lapidary material.
