Notes
This very dramatic, black and white polished petrified wood log was found in Utah and is over 100 million years old. It is thought that the original wood log fell in the forest and was covered by lava from a volcanic eruption. Over time the minerals in the silt were dissolved out by the rains and slowly seeped into the wood, replacing the original material with micro-crystals of quartz agate. The various colors in the stone have to do with the particular minerals that were in the lava and soil as it saturated the wood with the black coloration often due to the presence of manganese.
